Dean Winchester was a demon hunter, had been since he was just a kid until he sold his soul to save his brother's life. He brought his younger brother Sam back from the dead by making a deal with a crossroads demon but was only given a year to live.

The angel Castiel went down to save Dean but, unlike in canon, it took him a little longer to get to him, and by the time he reached his target Dean was too far gone. The broken Winchester was already well on his way to becoming local and Castiel failed.

A year after Dean went to hell, Sam put a ritual together to get him out but sadly found his now demonic brother had no memory of him. All he knows is he wants to go home to Hell and get back to work. Though he had only been gone for a year on Earth, to Dean in Hell it had been over a century.

Over time memories have slowly returned, to an extent. He remembers bits and peieces, he knows Sam is his brother and he wants to protect him, he just sometimes goes a little over board. A guy shoves Sam in a bar, Dean may beat him to death with a pool cue, makes sense to him.

After an unfortunate run in with Ruby that left her dead ahead of schedule, Sam started to go through withdrawals from lack of demon blood, and Dean wasn't about to let his brother suffer. So, he picks up where Ruby left off in Sam's training, hoping they can kill Lilith so she doesn't have the chance to send Dean back to hell. Plus they have angels on their ass for messing up their plans.

Over all Dean behaves himself, he knows hurting people is wrong and he really doesn't want to disappoint his brother by killing people, but after almost a century of torturing people he can sometimes get a little twitchy if he goes to long without some kind action, usually filled by torturing demons.
